Good news for the Canadian automotive industry, as GMC has officially announced that the Sierra HD will be added to the production line at its Oshawa plant in Ontario. The Chevrolet Silverado is already assembled at the same facility, which should make it easier to adapt the plant to accommodate production of its GMC twin.
This announcement comes as part of a $1 billion investment by General Motors in its Canadian operations. Approximately $144 million will be dedicated to upgrading the Oshawa plant to accommodate Sierra HD production.
A Source of National Pride
The Oshawa plant is more than just a building. It is also an important part of the brand’s history. General Motors has already produced more than 500,000 Silverados there since November 2021, which is certainly no small achievement. In fact, the 500,000th vehicle was a Silverado HD equipped with the Z71 Off-Road Package.
What makes the Oshawa plant even more special is its ability to assemble both 1500-series trucks and the Silverado HD. In fact, it is the only General Motors plant of its kind in North America.
A Canadian-Built V8
Canada isn’t just where these big trucks are assembled; it is also where their heart will be built. General Motors recently announced a $691 million investment to produce its next-generation V8 engine at its St. Catharines plant in Ontario. An additional $215 million has also been invested to produce a transmission at the same facility.
A Decision That Carries Weight
An investment of this magnitude in the Canadian automotive industry is no small matter, especially considering the U.S. president’s position on tariffs applied to vehicles sold in the United States but produced elsewhere. In any case, it is encouraging to see that this hasn’t stopped an American giant like General Motors from investing here.
